Watershed Warriors: Spring Valley Community Cleanup

Join I Love A Clean San Diego and the County of San Diego for a virtually-hosted litter cleanup in the Spring Valley community! We will pick-up litter from the community and divert it from the San Diego Bay watershed and Pacific Ocean.

These cleanups are currently virtually-hosted; we are not gathering or meeting in a specific location. Instead, you can do a fun and flexible cleanup on your terms. While we are targeting this specific community, you are welcome to clean up wherever and with whomever you feel comfortable.

Invite your neighbors and practice social distancing. Bring a bucket and gardening gloves from home, and wear your face-covering. You can make this cleanup zero-waste by using your own supplies!

Watch the kick-off video you get in your e-mail, then clean up in the neighborhood and use your household cans for disposal. Afterwards, log your totals and request a Letter of Appreciation for your service – it’s that easy!

ONE DAY – 30,000 POUNDS OF LITTER CHALLENGE

Get into action this Earth Day by participating in the19th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup on April 24th, 2021. Register to be a part of the largest single day environmental action event in San Diego County by removing polluting litter and debris from your community. After a challenging year for many, we are excited to turn our collective passion into action and make a positive impact on Your Neighborhood, Our Earth.

We invite you to get outside, stay close to your home, and collect litter throughout the streets of your neighborhood anytime on April 24th. By joining forces with I Love A Clean San Diego and getting out in your local community to remove trash, you can support your neighborhood and protect our San Diego watersheds. Volunteers of all ages are invited to grab buckets and work gloves and walk your block. No matter where you live in San Diego County, every gutter, street, parking lot, park, canyon and beach is in one of the county’s 11 watersheds. The health of these systems means healthier creeks and ocean for all of us!

Goal to Remove 30,000 Pounds of Litter

At Creek to Bay in 2020, volunteers self-reported 15,682 total pounds of litter removed in one day! Our goal this year is to double our passion, double our action, double our litter removed from our environment! Help us remove 30,000 pounds of litter in a single day – Saturday, April 24th! Once you register, a survey link and QR code will be sent to help report litter totals after your local neighborhood cleanup. Your self-reported litter totals will be automatically uploaded to our Volunteer Impact Map and contribute to our county-wide cleanup goal of 30,000 pounds of litter removed. Reported totals helps give us a snapshot of what is impacting our region year to year and gives our organization insight into how to keep our neighborhoods and environment litter-free. Thank you for making the effort to be citizen scientists and report back on litter collected.

Be A Drop in the Bucket

I Love A Clean San Diego is hosting a Bucket Drive April 10th from 9am-1pm at our office in Kearny Mesa for the 19th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup. Swap those disposable cleanup supplies out for a zero waste cleanup kit! Donate $30 or more to our organization and receive an Upcycled Cleanup Kit as a thank you gift with a branded bucket and grabber – all the tools you will need for a zero waste cleanup! The ‘Drop in the Bucket Program’ sources buckets from local restaurants and upcycles them into cleanup resources to keep waste out of the landfill and litter out of our oceans. Join us in a zero waste cleanup on April 24th, and be a drop in the bucket towards a litter free San Diego! Donations for cleanup kits prior to the Bucket Drive on April 10th must be made through this link – Donate Here! Pending inventory availability, you may make your donation on site.

Clean Canyons for a Clean Coast Virtual Cleanup – City Heights

city_heights_canyon

Did you know that 80% of coastal debris stems from inland sources? Protect San Diego’s canyons and waterways at I Love A Clean San Diego’s Clean Canyons for a Clean Coast virtual cleanup in City Heights! We will be working with our friends at San Diego Canyonlands and San Diego District 9 Community Cleanups to support our volunteers where they need it most. Hosted in partnership with the California Coastal Commission’s Adopt-A-Beach Program, this cleanup will help remove litter and debris from entering our oceans by collecting it at an inland location. With your help, we can eliminate trash and waste before they pollute our ocean and help protect and preserve the natural state of canyons in City Heights!

City Heights residents will sign up on the Community Hub as a household (or individuals) to walk their block OR at Litter Hotspots in one of the 16 City Heights neighborhoods to clean up. Please clean up only in your neighborhood and at your requested location to avoid gathering and stay safe. Please refrain from participating if you do not live in City Heights to limit external travel and the spread of COVID-19.

As a virtual cleanup, there will not be a main meeting point – you will simply clean up in your neighborhood or Litter Hotspot between 8am and 11am. Note that this is a street cleanup only; do not enter into nearby canyons as volunteer activity in City of San Diego canyons is currently restricted. Volunteers will be asked to report their cleanup details via a simple online survey after the event so we can track each household’s impact.

We provide community service hours and Letters of Appreciation for volunteers. This is a great opportunity for students and families to learn ways to protect our local environment! This event also qualifies for the VOLUNTEER rocker in the 2020 patch set! Details on how to request these items will be sent after the event to registered volunteers.

Supplies will not be provided for this event. Volunteers are asked to use their own reusable and repurposed items such as buckets, grocery bags, work/garden/dish gloves, and refillable water bottles to promote zero waste practices and help us in our mission to have a zero waste, litter free and environmentally engaged San Diego region!

Registration available on our Community Hub – get ready and activate or create your account and register for your neighborhood using the register button below!

Please join us in this opportunity to protect the environment as well as ourselves, and “walk-your-block” Saturday morning.

Get your family together for a cleanup down the street! Invite your neighbors, and please practice responsible social distancing. Creek to Bay 2020 Packing Party

Our 18th Annual Creek to Bay cleanup is on Saturday, April 25th from 9am-12pm! At last year’s event, 4,900 volunteers removed over 108,970 pounds of litter and debris from 117 sites throughout San Diego! This incredible impact was made possible by volunteers like you at the Packing Party last March, who assembled the supplies for each of those 117 sites in just four days.

In preparation for this year’s cleanup, we are looking for volunteers for our Packing Party to assist in assembling boxes of supplies to make this 18th Annual Creek to Bay cleanup a huge success. Volunteers will report to one of two locations in Kearny Mesa: our new office located at 5797 Chesapeake Court, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92123 (Thursday 3/12), or the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center located at 3170 Armstrong Street, San Diego, CA 92111 (Friday 3/13 and 3/16-3/18).

Tasks include counting and bundling supplies, packing boxes with specific quantities of items, double checking the packed boxes to ensure all of the supplies are there, and helping load the packed boxes into our truck and back to our office. Some heavy lifting may be needed, but is not required. Volunteers will sit, stand, bend, and walk. Volunteers aged 14 and up are preferred, as attention to detail and counting are a crucial part of this assembly.

Whether you sign up for a full day or just a few hours, we would love your help! A minimum of 2 hours per day is required. We will offer service forms for those in need, and this opportunity is available for court-ordered hours. If you or anyone you know is interested in helping, please sign up by emailing Jackie Blumenthal with the date(s) and time(s) you would like to volunteer at jblumenthal@cleansd.org or (619) 787-2604.
