36th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day

Coastal Cleanup Day 2020

36th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day

Protecting the coast begins at your front door. Free online registration opens on September 1.

The 36th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day is going virtual on Saturday, September 26, 2020 in San Diego County. Register to join the county’s Official Coastal Cleanup Day coordinators, I Love A Clean San Diego, and be a part of the global cleanup effort by removing polluting litter and debris from your community throughout the day on September 26th. Volunteers of all ages are invited to grab buckets and work gloves (or whatever you can round up and repurpose from around the house – we have ideas for you!) and walk your block with your household to stay close to home and protect the health of our community and our environment. Whether you’re coastal or inland, it all makes a huge impact on the health of our waterways and oceans – protecting the coast starts at your front door.

Become a citizen scientist

An important part of this event is collecting data on the types of litter that volunteers clean up; we look to you to be citizen scientists and report back on your litter findings! This data helps give us a snapshot of what is impacting our region year to year. A link to a form will be sent to all registrants to help us gather that data. Your cleanup and findings will be shared on our Volunteer Impact Map to track cleanup totals, all day long, countywide!

Need help with supplies?

For those volunteers who do not have cleanup supplies or internet access to submit their data, Supply and Data Hubs will be stationed throughout the county, hosted by our Community Champions, where volunteers can pick up bags, gloves, and data cards and pencils to keep track of litter data, and return completed data cards. Registration is required to receive these materials.

Registration opens Tuesday, September 1st at CleanupDay.org

Officially sign up on September 1, 2020 and then get ready to clean up your neighborhood on September 26. Registered volunteers will receive important safety and virtual event resources and information to have a successful cleanup. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Jackie Blumenthal, to register by phone if you do not have internet access: (619) 787-2604. Throughout the month of September, I Love A Clean San Diego will be sharing educational videos, zero waste tips and tricks, waste and recycling guides, and messages from our partners to prepare you and get you pumped for the big day. Learn more about patches, community service verification, contests, and more at CleanupDay.org!

Creek to Bay 2020 Packing Party

Our 18th Annual Creek to Bay cleanup is on Saturday, April 25th from 9am-12pm! At last year’s event, 4,900 volunteers removed over 108,970 pounds of litter and debris from 117 sites throughout San Diego! This incredible impact was made possible by volunteers like you at the Packing Party last March, who assembled the supplies for each of those 117 sites in just four days.

In preparation for this year’s cleanup, we are looking for volunteers for our Packing Party to assist in assembling boxes of supplies to make this 18th Annual Creek to Bay cleanup a huge success. Volunteers will report to one of two locations in Kearny Mesa: our new office located at 5797 Chesapeake Court, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92123 (Thursday 3/12), or the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center located at 3170 Armstrong Street, San Diego, CA 92111 (Friday 3/13 and 3/16-3/18).

Tasks include counting and bundling supplies, packing boxes with specific quantities of items, double checking the packed boxes to ensure all of the supplies are there, and helping load the packed boxes into our truck and back to our office. Some heavy lifting may be needed, but is not required. Volunteers will sit, stand, bend, and walk. Volunteers aged 14 and up are preferred, as attention to detail and counting are a crucial part of this assembly.

Whether you sign up for a full day or just a few hours, we would love your help! A minimum of 2 hours per day is required. We will offer service forms for those in need, and this opportunity is available for court-ordered hours. If you or anyone you know is interested in helping, please sign up by emailing Jackie Blumenthal with the date(s) and time(s) you would like to volunteer at jblumenthal@cleansd.org or (619) 787-2604.

18th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup Goes Virtual with Facebook Live Kickoff

This is the first major cleanup run by you! Get out in your neighborhood along with thousands of other small cleanup efforts to make a lasting environmental impact.

Registration is now open at CreektoBay.org

As an adjustment to our typical cleanup events, we are excited to transition the 18th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup to a virtual cleanup! On Saturday June 20th, we invite you and your family to get outside, get active, and collect litter close to home. By getting out in your local community to remove trash – together virtually and physically apart – you can support your neighborhood and protect our San Diego watersheds. No matter where you live in San Diego, you live in a watershed – together we can take responsibility for the debris entering our ocean and impacting the wildlife that calls this place home! Now, more than ever, it is essential that we take care of our environment and keep this planet trash-free.

Register here, then, tune-in to the live broadcast event kick-off Saturday from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM on our Facebook page. It will feature hosts from I Love A Clean San Diego and partners, with important volunteer and safety information. Throughout the day, we will cover live check-ins with participants across the county who will share their experience and what pollutants they are finding.

Although Creek to Bay typically runs for three hours, 9 a.m. to noon, organizers want as many people as possible to spend what time they can in their communities, so volunteers are able to participate anytime during the day.

We are also excited to launch the Volunteer Impact Map. This participatory map allows volunteers countywide to submit their cleanup location and stats to create visual and quantitative measurement of the day’s cleanup efforts. Everyone is asked to check-in throughout the day to see the stats and locations expand.

“Your Neighborhood, Our Environment.”

In years past, about 5,000 volunteers have cleaned up an average of 140,000 pounds of litter at more than 100 sites in need countywide at each event. Even with this year’s restrictions, organizers at I Love A Clean San Diego are excited to see the results from the many small efforts countywide and hope the Creek to Bay’s tagline, “Your Neighborhood, Our Environment,” highlights the importance of taking action locally to contribute regionally and beyond.

All volunteers must sign a waiver regardless of age, and minors under the age of 18 require an additional parent or guardian signature on their waiver form.  Save time in line and print yours in advance here.
