Sustainable Systems Coordinator (Full-time)

REPORTS TO: Waste Recovery Manager

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

PAY RANGE: $20.00 per hour (depending on experience) and mileage reimbursement (at current CA reimbursement rate)

The Sustainable Systems Coordinator will lead I Love A Clean San Diego’s school recycling and waste diversion infrastructure program.  Programming involves auditing local schools and businesses to identify infrastructure needs, training school and district stakeholders and students, and providing recommendations and hands-on assistance to improve their waste diversion rates. The Sustainable Systems Coordinator may assist with business outreach programs and conduct waste assessments throughout San Diego County. Additionally, this position will support the overall Waste Recovery and Community Engagement team with event support; events may include community cleanups, swap events, repair workshops, Oil Filter Exchange Events, operating our Zero Waste Database and Hotline service, and administrative tasks as needed.


  • Lead and implement School Recycling Infrastructure Program
    • Perform inspections and waste assessments, coordinate with haulers, schools, and district faculty
    • Coordinate and deliver staff trainings on organic and traditional recycling, waste management, and bin placement for custodial staff, kitchen staff, campus supervisors, teachers, and administrative staff
    • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with school and district leaders to provide guidance on recycling initiatives
    • Create educational materials for schools and staff on organic waste recycling, waste practices, and sustainable initiatives
    • Monitor the success of schools and districts, and report on the progress of the recycling program over time
    • Identify and pursue opportunities to expand the School Recycling Infrastructure program to local schools across San Diego County
  • Support Business Outreach Programs (as needed)
    • Conduct business outreach to commercial properties to educate businesses about solid waste ordinances and legislation
    • Provide overview of ordinance and printed educational materials
    • Keep detailed records of business outreach activities
    • Compile and analyze data gathered from business outreach to inform jurisdictions of business demographics, compliance, current knowledge of legislation, and additional datapoints
  • Generate monthly and ongoing contract reports
  • Attend organizational events, booths, and cleanups as needed including two annual Oil Filter Exchange Events (May and November). Additional weekend work may be required between the months of May and August, with an expected 2-3 days per month of Saturday work
  • Support WasteFreeSD call center as needed
  • Other supporting activities across the organization as necessary


  • Reliable transportation; ability and willingness to travel across San Diego County for in-person programs
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
  • Located in San Diego County
  • Ability to work weekends and/or evenings as needed. Must be able to work 2-3 weekends per month between May and August.
  • Knowledge of San Diego region preferred
  • Ability to pass a background check prior to employment
  • Ability to move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. to off-site locations and occasionally remain stationary for long periods at a time
  • Bilingual (English/ Spanish) preferred


  • Project management experience
  • Knowledge of environmental challenges facing San Diego County, especially waste and recycling issues
  • Effective written and spoken communication skills for diverse audiences; comfort public speaking to audiences of various sizes both in-person and virtually
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word
  • Eager to troubleshoot and work independently to tackle challenges
  • Flexible and eager to learn
  • Positive and dynamic interpersonal skills
  • Professional representation of ILACSD in all settings
  • High level of organization and attention to detail; ability to multi-task
  • Highly motivated; proactive self-starter
  • Ability to work well independently and on a team


  • Full-time, non-exempt
  • $20 – $23 per hour, depending on experience
  • Mileage reimbursement at current CA reimbursement rate
